Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: A Movie Review
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (transl. Oh heart, it is difficult) is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language musical romantic drama film directed, produced and written by Karan Johar under his banner Dharma Productions. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles, with Fawad Khan, Lisa Haydon and Imran Abbas in supporting roles. The film also features cameo appearances by Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt and Neha Dhupia.
The film tells the story of Ayan Sanger (Kapoor), a singer who narrates his experience of love and friendship with Alizeh Khan (Sharma), a free-spirited girl who he meets in London and becomes friends with. However, Alizeh still loves her ex-boyfriend DJ Ali (Khan), who broke her heart in the past. Ayan falls in love with Alizeh but she rejects his feelings and marries DJ Ali. Heartbroken, Ayan meets Saba Taliyar Khan (Rai Bachchan), a poetess who helps him cope with his pain and pursue his passion for music. However, Ayan's love for Alizeh remains unrequited, as he learns that she is diagnosed with cancer and has only a few months to live.
The film explores the themes of unrequited love, friendship, loss and acceptance. The film's soundtrack composed by Pritam was an instant blockbuster, with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and songs sung by Arijit Singh, Shilpa Rao, Amit Mishra and others. The film's title track "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" became one of the most popular songs of the year, along with other songs like "Channa Mereya", "Bulleya" and "The Breakup Song". The film's cinematography by Anil Mehta captured the scenic locations of London, Paris and Vienna beautifully.
The film received positive reviews from critics upon release, with praise for its direction, music, cinematography and performances of the cast, especially Kapoor, Sharma and Rai Bachchan. The film also faced some controversies before its release due to the involvement of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in the wake of the Uri attack in 2016. The film was banned in some states of India and faced protests from some political parties. However, the film was eventually released worldwide on 28 October 2016 coinciding with the festival of Diwali and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.
